Box Score
The top-ranked Trinity Western University Spartans captured a straight-sets victory over the University of Regina women's volleyball team on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport.
After dropping the first set 25-17, the Cougars made things interesting in both the second and third sets. Trailing 17-12 in the second set, the Cougars used a 4-0 run to get within a single point. The Spartans, however, would respond with a quick burst of their own to dispel any chance of Regina getting even in the match, finishing with a 25-20 win.
With the teams tied 20-20 in the third set, it looked as though the Cougars might fight to see a fourth set. But once again the Spartans proved to be too much to handle, finishing the set on a 5-1 run to seal the 25-21 set win.
Amber Brown led the way for the visitors, picking up 11 kills on 21 attempts. Royale Richardson paced the Spartans with 11 digs, while Alicia Perrin posted a match-high five blocks.
Regina was led by
Michelle Sweeting, who compiled seven kills on 17 attempts. Both
Desiree Ates and
Chelsea Ziolkowski recorded 11 digs, while
Meagan Lane's five service aces were the most by a U of R player in a three-set match since single-match records began being tracked in 2002.
Each team struggled from the baseline in the match, with the Cougars committing 10 service errors. The Spartans weren't far behind with nine of their own, but made up for it by hitting over .300 for the match including .500 in the second set alone.
The two teams are slated to meet again on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m in Regina.
