The University of Regina's women's volleyball took the first set from No. 2-ranked UBC, but ended up losing 3-1 to the Thunderbirds at the War Memorial Gym on the UBC campus in Vancouver.
The Cougars scored seven of eight points following a
Melanie Sanford timeout midway through the first set to take an 18-15 lead. The teams traded points until a four-point run by UBC brought the two teams even at 23 apiece, and the Cougars broke a 25-25 draw with back-to-back points on a
Desiree Ates kill and a
Trisha Dobson and
Chelsea Ziolkowski block to take the first set 27-25.
But that would be the high point of the match for the Cougars, as UBC responded with convincing 25-11, 25-17, and 25-19 wins in the second, third, and fourth sets to clinch the match.
Lisa Barclay led UBC (8-1) with 14 kills and had a .308 hitting percentage for the match, while Shanice Marcelle collected 12 kills and added eight digs and six blocks. Briana Liau Kent led all players with 17 digs for the Thunderbirds.
Ates led the Cougars (1-8) with 12 kills and 14 digs, while libero
Megan Semeniuk added 12 digs. The Cougars struggled with serve receive as a team in the loss, giving up a total of 15 service aces to UBC over the course of the four-set match.
