The University of Regina's women's volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to top-ranked Trinity Western on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars took the first set by a 25-20 margin, but that was the high point of the match for the home side. Trinity Western rebounded with a 25-18 win in the second, then hit .500 as a team in a convincing 25-14 victory in the third set and clinched the match with another 25-18 win in the fourth.
Amy Ott led all players with 13 kills for Trinity Western, while Alicia Perrin had 11 kills, hit for a team-leading .429 percentage, and tied setter Kelsi French for the match lead with four blocks. French ended up with 38 assists while controlling a Trinity Western offence that hit .231 for the match. Royal Richardson led the Spartans with nine digs and registered the team's only two solo blocks.
Michelle Sweeting had 10 kills and just two errors on 23 attacks for the Cougars, giving her a team-high .348 hitting percentage in the match.
Desiree Ates led the team with 12 kills, while
Chelsea Ziolkowski was solid all match long for the U of R and ended up leading all players with 15 digs.
Trinity Western is now mired in a five-way tie for second place in the Canada West standings with a 3-1 record. The Spartans are back at home next weekend with a pair of matches against winless Thompson Rivers (0-4).
The Cougars (1-3) will also hit the road. They'll travel to Edmonton for a pair of games against the University of Alberta, which has a 2-2 Canada West record and was ranked third in this week's CIS Top Ten.
