The University of Regina's women's volleyball team opened Friday's match against No. 4 Alberta with victories in the first and second sets, but the Pandas came roaring back to record a 3-2 comeback win in a Canada West match in Edmonton.
The Cougars broke an 18-18 deadlock with a 7-1 run to take the first set by a 25-19 margin, then scored a 25-21 win in the second to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
That's when all the momentum swung in favour of Alberta. They scored a convincing 25-15 win in the third, then had a 25-18 victory in the fourth and scored eight of the first nine points en route to a 15-6 match-clinching fifth-set win.
Alena Omelchenko led all players with 17 kills for Alberta, while Jaki Ellis had 33 assists and 12 kills and Whitney Matheson had 11 kills and 12 digs.
Meagan Onstad had 11 kills and a match-high 16 digs for the Cougars, while
Roxanne Olynyk had 12 kills and 10 digs and
Michelle Sweeting had 11 kills.
The win improves Alberta's conference record to 12-5, while the loss mathematically eliminates the Cougars (4-13) from contention for the Canada West postseason.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Edmonton following the conclusion of the men's match. It'll be webcast live at
