Tiffany Herman set a school single-match record with six service aces, but the University of Regina's women's volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to Alberta on Saturday night in Edmonton.
Just like Friday's game, the Cougars opened up the match with a first-set victory over the No. 4-ranked Pandas, going on 14-3 run midway through the set and rolling to a 25-15 win.
But – just like Friday's game – Alberta rallied to record a comeback victory. The Pandas took the second and third sets by 25-16 scores and then came up with a 25-21 match-clinching win in the fourth to register their 13th Canada West victory of the season.
Whitney Matheson and Alena Omelchenko both had 13 kills for Alberta, while Jaki Ellis had 34 assists and 10 digs and Caitlin Buckell led all players with seven total blocks.
Chelsea Ziolkowski and
Meagan Onstad both had nine kills for the Cougars, while Herman had 34 assists and six digs. Fifth-year libero
Rebecca Rink led all players with 14 digs, while
Solveig Nilson and
Roxanne Olynyk both chipped in offensively with eight kills.
Herman's six service aces stand as the most in U of R history since single-match records are available dating back to 2002, breaking the old mark of five shared by Beth Clark, Katherine Diduck, and Tara Smart.
The Cougars will square off against Calgary next Friday and Saturday in their final weekend of the 2011-12 season, a series which will also be the final matches in U of R uniforms for Herman, Nilson, Onstad, and Rink. The teams will play in Gym 1 at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport on Friday night and in the main gym at the CKHS on Saturday.
