Meagan Cormier (pictured) set a school record with four goals and added an assist to power the University of Regina's women's soccer team to a 5-0 win over Winnipeg on Sunday afternoon in a Canada West match at the U of R Field.
The win improves Regina's conference record to 3-0-0, giving the Cougars their best start in program history.
It took the Cougars less than six minutes to get on the board, as Cormier sent a nice through ball to
Tayler Firth behind the Winnipeg defence. Firth was able to finish, notching her first of the season and giving the home side an early 1-0 advantage. Cormier put the Cougars up by two after some nice dribbling from about 25 yards out set up an open shot, which she drilled into the left side of the net to put the U of R up two going into the half.
Cormier scored her second of the game shortly following halftime, as she pounced on a failed Winnipeg clearing attempt and tucked it by Wesmen keeper Ainslie McConkey. She then scored her third of the contest in the 68th minute, firing a shot that deflected off the bottom of the cross bar and in after a scramble following a corner kick.
Cormier's fourth of the contest came in injury time, as she found the far corner of the net on a free kick from about 22 yards out. She becomes the first Canada West player to score four goals in a single game since 2009, when UBC's Janine Frazao accomplished the feat twice.
Making her first CIS start, first-year goalkeeper
Kacey McFee had a four-save shutout for the Cougars. McConkey made seven saves for Winnipeg, which was led by Kayla Jacobsen's four shot attempts.
Winnipeg had 19 shot attempts to Regina's 18 and also had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Wesmen, who drop to 0-3-1 with the loss, are at home next weekend with matches against UBC and Trinity Western.
The Cougars – tied with Trinity Western for first place in the conference standings after the first two weekends of play – will play their first road match of the season next weekend as they'll square off with UNBC on Sunday in Prince George, B.C.
