Box Score
The University of Regina's women's basketball team hit a season-high 12 three-pointers in a 78-63 victory over the Alberta Pandas on Friday night in Canada West action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Danielle Schmidt (pictured) led the U of R with a season-high 20 points, while
Kehlsie Crone was 4-for-5 from three-point range and set a career high with 16 points to help the Cougars improve their Canada West record to 13-2 on the season.
Saskia Van Ginhoven had 14 points to lead Alberta, which drops to 8-7 with the loss.
The two teams traded leads early in the first quarter, with Alberta jumping out to an early five-point advantage on an Anneka Bakker three-pointer that gave the Pandas a 12-7 lead. The Cougars took the lead for good on Schmidt's first three ball of the night with a minute left in the first quarter and took a three-point advantage into the second.
A jumper by Bakker brought Alberta to within one at 23-22 early in the second, but the No. 3-ranked Cougars slowly pulled away from there. They led by eight at the half and held onto the eight-point advantage as both teams scored 17 in the third quarter. Regina poured it on in the fourth, scoring 10 straight points to open up a 16-point lead midway through the final period.
The Cougars were on fire from three-point range, going 12-for-25 from downtown largely due to the efforts of Crone, Schmidt, and
Michelle Clark. Clark ended up with 11 points and a game-high six assists, while
Brittany Read added nine points and nine rebounds for the U of R and joined Jackie Moore and Chelsea Cassano as the only players in school history to pull down 600 career rebounds.
Bakker and Jessilyn Fairbanks joined Van Ginhoven in double figures for Alberta, ending up with 10 points apiece. Van Ginhoven and Kendra Asleson both had five rebounds for the Pandas.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night beginning at 6:15 p.m.
