Manitoba claims weekend sweep with win over Cougars

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team fell to 3-15 on the season after being defeated in three sets on Sunday by the Manitoba Bisons at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.

Taylor Pischke led all players with 11 kills for Manitoba, while Pischke, Mariel Garcia, Christina Souza, and Nicole Hall all tied for the team lead with seven digs. Souza also had 23 assists while controlling a Manitoba offence that hit .229 for the match.

Fourth-year libero Megan Semeniuk had a match-high 13 digs for the Cougars, while Tori Glynn chipped in with 11. Chelsea Ziolkowski led the way with seven kills for the U of R.

The Bisons opened the first set with five straight points to force a Cougar timeout and held onto that advantage until the media break, after which Manitoba went on a 9-3 run to take the opener by a 25-14 margin.

Though the Cougars had a slight advantage in hitting percentage in the second set – ending up with an .094 hitting percentage to Manitoba's .077 clip – the Bisons had the edge on the baseline and at the net. Manitoba had seven points off service aces and Regina service errors and enjoyed a 4-1 advantage in blocks, ending up with a 25-18 win in the second set.

The Bisons hit .333 as a team in the third set, which they won 25-14 to clinch the victory over the U of R.

The Cougars are back in action next weekend with a home-and-home against Saskatchewan. The two teams will meet in Saskatoon on Thursday before finishing off the weekend series at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport on campus at the U of R on Saturday night.
