Box Score
Though the University of Regina's women's soccer team clinched a postseason berth the previous night thanks to the out-of-town scoreboard, the Cougars still finished off the Canada West schedule with a 1-0 win over UNBC on Saturday afternoon at the U of R Field.
Tayler Firth (pictured) scored the only goal of the match and
Stephanie Possberg earned her sixth career shutout for the Cougars, who will head into the postseason after compiling a 5-5-2 record and either a seventh-place or eighth-place finish in the conference standings depending on Fraser Valley's result later on Saturday night at Manitoba.
Firth's goal came in the 25th minute after collecting a deflected ball sent in from the right by
Melanie King. She got into shooting position 20 yards out and made no mistake, scoring her third of the season and what would stand up to be her seventh career game-winning strike – the most by any Cougar in the history of the program.
Possberg was only called upon to make one save, which came midway through the second half after UNBC's Sydney Hall directed a light shot towards the Cougar net after a scramble following a corner kick.
Goalkeeper Jordan Hall – who's played every minute between the posts for UNBC this season – was kept busy, as the Cougars attempted 20 shots and forced her to make a total of eight saves.
Cougar head coach
Bob Maltman made extensive use of his bench, sending in all seven of his available subtitutes including rookie
Brianne Parschauer, who made her Canada West debut in the second half. It was the youngsters that brought the win home for the U of R, which finished the game with seven players in their first or second seasons of CIS eligibility on the pitch.
UNBC (1-8-2) will make the short trek north to finish off its conference schedule on Sunday at Saskatchewan, while the Cougars will await the conclusion of Saturday's matches to find out who they'll play next weekend in the Canada West quarterfinals – likely one of Victoria, UBC, or Alberta.
