Box Score

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team had a 2-1 lead after three sets on Saturday afternoon at Winnipeg, but the Wesmen took the fourth and fifth sets to claim a 3-2 win in a Canada West match at the Duckworth Centre.

Ozana Nikolic had 18 kills and led all players with 17 digs for Winnipeg, which improves its conference record to 2-1 on the season.

Desiree Ates had 19 kills and 10 digs for the Cougars, while Michelle Sweeting had 16 kills and no errors on 30 attacks to record a match-high .533 hitting percentage.

Winnipeg started out with a 25-20 victory in the first set, but the Cougars replied with a 25-17 win in the second to even the match at a set apiece. The U of R then outlasted the Wesmen for a 28-26 victory in the third set, fighting off a set point with a kill and ace by Sweeting on back-to-back plays and clinching the set with a nice cross-court kill by Chelsea Ziolkowski.

But the Wesmen controlled the match from there, winning 25-14 in the fourth to force a deciding set which the home side won by a 15-9 count after pulling away from the Cougars early.

Carleen Kruschel added 11 kills for the Wesmen, who hit .234 as a team and had 10 blocks during the match. Setter Ellina Domnidou had 45 assists and eight digs, while libero Tia Boroski had 16 digs.

The Cougars (0-3) also had 15 digs from Megan Semeniuk, while Tori Glynn had nine kills and 12 digs to fall just short of a double-double and Sweeting had two solo blocks and three assisted blocks to lead all players at the net.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon.
