Box Score
Brody Luhning and
Tyler Henry (pictured) had three-point nights and
Liam Brennan scored in overtime as the University of Regina's men's hockey team scored its second victory over Saskatchewan in as many nights with a 4-3 win over the Huskies on Thursday in Saskatoon.
Brennan pounced on a rebound with under a minute left in the extra period to give the Cougars the win, while
Brock Appleyard, Luhning, and
Tyler Penny also scored for the U of R and goalie
Andrew Hayes made 38 saves in the victory. John Lawrence, Ryan McDonald, and Kenton Dulle replied for Saskatchewan.
The Cougars (8-6-0) are now three points up on Saskatchewan for third place in the Canada West standings.
Just like Wednesday night, Saskatchewan opened the scoring in the first period before the Cougars replied with three unanswered goals. Lawrence notched his first of the campaign less than three minutes into the game, but Appleyard tied the game six minutes later after collecting a rebound off a Henry shot.
The Cougars took the lead just 29 seconds into the second period when Luhning's blast from the point on the power play gave the rookie defenceman his first CIS goal. And less than two minutes later, the U of R extended the lead to 3-1 after Penny kept on a 2-on-1 and beat Saskatchewan goalie Ryan Holfeld with a slap shot.
But the two-goal advantage didn't even last a minute, as Saskatchewan's McDonald scored just 46 seconds later to cut the lead to 3-2. The score stayed that way until Dulle's goal just shy of the eight-minute mark of the third period, which tied the game at 3-3 and would set the stage for Brennan's third game-winning goal of the month.
The Cougars return to action next Friday and Saturday with a pair of road games against No. 2-ranked Calgary.
