The University of Regina's women's volleyball team had a convincing win in the first set and rode that momentum to a three-set victory over No. 2-ranked Trinity Western on Friday night in Langley, B.C.
The Cougars opened up the match with a 25-16 win in the first set, then won 25-20 in the second and clinched the match with a 25-22 win in the third set. The third was highlighted by a late Cougar comeback, as the U of R trailed 19-15 late in the set before going on a 7-2 run to take the lead and then collected three of the next four points to take the win.
Desiree Ates put down 13 kills for the Cougars, while
Michelle Sweeting had eight and
Molly Wade-Cummings had seven and a .545 hitting percentage. The win improves the U of R's Canada West record to 3-6 as the Cougars are now mired in a four-way tie with Mount Royal, Saskatchewan, and Winnipeg for eighth in the conference standings.
Chelsea Tancon and Royal Richardson both led Trinity Western (5-4) with 10 kills apiece.
The two teams will meet again in Langley on Saturday night (5:00 PST, canadawest.tv).
NOTES: The last time the Cougars took down one of the top two teams in the CIS was over three years ago when they scored a four-set road win over Manitoba back on Nov. 6, 2010 … the Bisons were also ranked No. 2 at the time.
