Brandon Tull (pictured) led all players with 20 points and fellow rookie guard
Ryan Delwo finished off a breakaway layup with six seconds left as the University of Regina's men's basketball team outlasted UNBC for a 74-73 win on Saturday night in Prince George, B.C.
With the Timberwolves up by one and with the ball late in the contest, Jibreel Stevens attempted a three-pointer that would have essentially sealed the victory for UNBC. But Stevens' shot found the back rim and the rebound went right to
Jeremy Zver, who found a wide-open Delwo with a 50-foot pass for the game-winning layup. UNBC had one last shot for the win, but Charles Barton's three-point attempt was no good.
Tull was 8-for-17 from the field and hit two three-pointers for his career-high 20 points, while Zver had 18 points and seven rebounds in just 21 minutes off the bench for the Cougars (2-6).
Will Tallman added 16 points and seven rebounds for the U of R and Delwo finished with eight points and a pair of assists in the victory.
Jeff Chu led UNBC with 14 points as the Timberwolves fall to 3-5 on the season.
The Cougars trailed by as many as 14 points late in the second quarter, but closed the first half with six straight points and took their first lead of their game four minutes into the third after a Tull triple gave the U of R a one-point advantage. That would turn out to be one of just two times the Cougars would lead in the contest, as UNBC quickly took the lead back and led by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter before the U of R finished the game on a 16-7 run capped by the Delwo bucket in the waning moments of the contest.
Now in sixth place in the Prairie Division, the Cougars will close out the first half of the conference schedule with two road games at Lethbridge (5-3) next Friday and Saturday.
