Desiree Ates (pictured) tied her career high with 23 kills, but it wasn't enough as the University of Regina's women's volleyball team was defeated in four sets by Trinity Western on Saturday night in Langley, B.C.

After sweeping the No. 2-ranked Spartans on Friday night, the Cougars started out right where they left off on Saturday with a 25-20 win in the first set. But the Spartans got rolling with a tight 26-24 win in the second which evened the match at a set apiece, and took 25-19 and 25-23 wins in the third and fourth sets to salvage a weekend split.

Sophie Carpentier led Trinity Western with 22 kills as the Spartans improve to 6-4 on the season. Casie Gano had 11 blocks for the Spartans, while libero Kristen Moncks led all players with 20 digs.

Ates had a stellar match on the outside for the U of R, as her 23 kills came with just seven errors on 44 attacks for a .364 hitting percentage. She also collected 14 digs, one behind Megan Semeniuk's team-leading total of 15. Michelle Sweeting had five digs and seven blocks, while Leah Shevkenek had 40 assists and Tori Glynn had 10 kills and nine digs to fall just short of a double-double.

The Cougars (3-7) return to the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport to host UBC next Friday and Saturday.
