The Cougars come into the weekend with a 4-4-0 record and tied with Saskatchewan for third place in the Canada West standings. Before having last week off, the Cougars split a weekend series at Mount Royal on Oct. 25 and 26. They picked up a 5-1 win on Friday before falling 5-2 on Saturday.
Regina's rookies have been stepping up in a big way early in the season as first-year players
Brody Luhning,
Cody Fowlie and
Christian Magnus lead the team in scoring. Luhning's eight assists lead all Canada West defencemen and he's also tied for the conference lead with six power play points, while Fowlie has a goal and six assists and Magnus has collected four goals and two assists.
Carter Selinger and
Mark Schneider both have three goals and three assists and are tied with Magnus for third on the team with six points.
Andrew Hayes and
Lucas Gore have split the netminding duties for the Cougars, with each sporting a 2-2-0 record. Hayes has a pair of shutouts to his credit along with a 2.01 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage.
This weekend also marks the return of
Dillon Johnstone to the Cougars' line-up, as the 6-5 forward from Frobisher, Sask. is back after a two year absence. In his last season with the Cougars back in 2010-11, he led the team with nine goals and 17 points while appearing in all 28 of Regina's Canada West games.
Meanwhile, Manitoba comes into town with a 2-5-1 record and tied with UBC for sixth place. The Bisons dropped a pair of games against Calgary during the final weekend of October by scores of 4-3 and 5-3.
Second-year forward Jesse Paradis and third-year forward Brendan Rowinski lead the Bisons in scoring, each with five points on the season. Paradis had a pair of goals and an assist against the Dinos, while Rowinski picked up three assists.
The goaltending duties in Manitoba have been more or less split between Joe Caligiuri and Deven Dubyk. Caligiuri has appeared in four games, allowing 15 goals on 139 shots. Dubyk has seen action in five contests and has a 2.53 goals-against average along with a shutout in his lone win of the season.
Historically, the Bisons have had the edge over the Cougars with wins in 125 of 215 meetings between the two teams. Last season saw Manitoba win three of four conference games before the two teams met in the Canada West quarterfinals. The Bisons swept Regina in two games, winning 6-2 and 5-0 to advance to the conference semifinals.
