Bobcats take 68-54 win over Cougars

The University of Regina's men's basketball team suffered a 68-54 loss to the Brandon Bobcats on Friday night at the Healthy Living Centre in Brandon, Man.

Frank Brown opened up the game with a three-pointer on the first possession of the game for the Cougars, but Brandon reeled off a 9-0 run to take a lead that they would hold onto for the rest of the game. The Bobcats led by four after the first quarter and took control of the contest with a 17-3 run in the second and led by 18 at the half.

The Cougars never really threatened in the second half, as Brandon led by about 20 for the majority of the final two quarters before a pair of Sterling Nostedt three-pointers in the waning moments of the fourth brought the Cougars back to within 14.

Led by 14 points from Ilarion Bonhomme, four of Brandon's five starters broke into double figures in scoring. Bonhomme, Jordan Reaves, and Turell Scott all had double-doubles for Brandon, while Bonhomme added a team-leading six assists.

Paul Gareau had a game-high 20 points for the Cougars and added 10 rebounds to collect his sixth double-double of the season, while Connor Burns led all players with 15 rebounds.

Both teams' 2012-13 season will end on Saturday night in Brandon. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be shown live at www.canadawest.tv.

NOTES: Gareau passes Brenan Schwartz for seventh on the U of R's all-time scoring list, as the fifth-year forward now has 1299 career points ... Gareau needs just nine points to pass Kevin Gilroy for sixth on the school's all-time scoring list ... Nostedt hit two three-pointers and is now tied with Dale Holmes for third in school history in career triples.
