Cross country and track & field star Kelly Wiebe highlighted the University of Regina's 38th Annual Athletics Awards Night held on Thursday at the University Theatre.
Wiebe was named the University of Regina Male Athlete of the Year and also earned the prestigious President's Award after a 2012-13 season which saw him win a CIS individual championship in cross country in the fall and both Canada West and CIS gold medals in the 3000-metre run in the spring. Wiebe becomes the school's first multiple major award winner since Shawn Peters accomplished the feat in 2001.
The University of Regina Female Athlete of the Year is a women's basketball player for the third consecutive season, as Michelle Clark earned the honour after being named a second-team All-Canadian and helping her team win its second Canada West championship in program history.
Both first-year award winners are hockey players, as blueliner Alexis Larson is the University of Regina Female Rookie of the Year and forward Ward Szucki was named the Male Rookie of the Year.
