Soccer hosts Canada West home openers this weekend

9/19/2013 2:38:00 PM

SATURDAY: vs. UBC, 12:00 p.m. (U of R Field)
SUNDAY: vs. Trinity Western, 12:00 p.m. (U of R Field)

After opening the Canada West schedule with three consecutive road games over the first two weekends, the University of Regina's women's soccer team plays at home for the first time in 2013 this Saturday and Sunday.

The Cougars have a 2-1-0 record and enter the weekend sitting in a tie for fourth place in the 13-team Canada West standings with six points. They started out the season with a 4-1 win over Winnipeg and a 1-0 victory over Manitoba, but suffered their first setback of the year last weekend after being edged 2-1 by Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.

Fifth-year striker Meagan Cormier has been her usual dangerous self for the Cougars already this season, as she's scored three of the team's six goals through the first three matches of the conference schedule. Cormier is closing in on the school's all-time scoring record, needing just one to tie Jessica Waller's mark of 18 career goals. Besides Cormier's three strikes – which tie her for third in the early Canada West scoring race – Veronica Boesch, Molly Glass, and Jayde McFee all have one each for the U of R. Stephanie Possberg started the Winnipeg match at keeper for the Cougars, but Kacey McFee has gotten the call in both matches since. Glass and defender Racquel Marshall are the only two players to have played all 270 minutes so far this season.

This weekend will be a stern test for the Cougars, as they face the two teams they squared off against in last year's Canada West Final Four. UBC comes into the weekend with a 1-0-2 record and ranked sixth in the CIS, while Trinity Western (1-1-1) was the top-ranked team in the country last week but fell two spots to No. 3 in this week's poll.

"They're both going to be extremely competitive teams and we'll have to be on our top form in order to compete with them," Cougars head coach Bob Maltman said. "We have a tremendous respect for their talent, but we've prepared well for both programs and we look forward to a great battle on the pitch on both Saturday and Sunday."

The Cougars battle UBC on Saturday and Trinity Western on Sunday. Both matches kick off at noon on campus at the U of R Field.
