Women’s soccer hosts Calgary, Lethbridge

9/26/2013 3:01:00 PM

The University of Regina's women's soccer team is back at home for a second consecutive weekend, as the Cougars will host Calgary on Saturday and Lethbridge on Sunday in a pair of matches with a noon kickoff at the U of R Field.

The Cougars had their home opener last Saturday, giving up three early goals to No. 6-ranked UBC in a 3-0 loss to the Thunderbirds. The team responded with a better effort on Sunday, playing to a scoreless draw with defending CIS champion Trinity Western. The Cougars are now 2-2-1 in conference play and sit in a tie for seventh place in the Canada West standings.

Fifth-year striker Meagan Cormier continues to sit on the doorstep of the University of Regina's all-time scoring lead, as she needs just one goal to tie Jessica Waller's mark of 18 goals and two to become the school's career leader in the category. Cormier has scored three of the Cougars' six goals this season, while fourth-year midfielder Molly Glass is the team's only outfielder to have played in all 450 minutes so far.

The U of R's two opponents come into the weekend at opposite ends of the tight Canada West standings. Calgary has a 4-0-1 mark, while Lethbridge is 0-3-2 through its first five matches of the conference schedule.

One of the hottest teams in the conference, Calgary's 4-0-1 record includes an opening-weekend 3-3 away draw with a University of Alberta team that's now ranked No. 3 in the country. Led by Tessa Miller and rookie Jordan Smith, Calgary has shredded opposing defences for a conference-leading 22 goals this year. Smith is second in Canada West with five goals on the season, while Miller has four goals and ranks second in the conference with five assists.

Though Lethbridge is still searching for its first win of the season, the Pronghorns have collected draws in their previous two matches and have only conceded seven goals in their first five matches. All three goalkeepers on Lethbridge's roster – Myriah Marino, Micaela Stone, and Taylor Thomas – have seen action for the Pronghorns in their last two matches.

After this weekend, the Cougars will have four consecutive road matches. They'll play Alberta and Mount Royal on Oct. 5 and Oct. 6 before heading to the West Coast to square off with Victoria (Oct. 11) and Fraser Valley (Oct. 12). The U of R finishes off the Canada West schedule the following weekend with a matchup against the University of Northern British Columbia on Saturday, Oct. 19.
