The University of Regina's women's soccer team opened up the Canada West schedule with a 4-1 road win over Winnipeg on Friday evening at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.

Meagan Cormier opened the scoring in the first half and added another in the second, while Veronica Boesch and Molly Glass (pictured) also had second-half strikes for the Cougars (1-0-0). Stephanie Possberg made five saves in the net for the visitors.

Chelsea Kwasnicki scored in the 67th minute to notch the lone goal of the game for the Wesmen (0-1-0).

With the Cougars facing a significant breeze in the first half, it was Winnipeg that had the first quality chances of the game. The Wesmen had a fine opportunity in the 25th minute after the U of R was whistled for a hand ball to give Winnipeg a free kick from just outside the box, but the shot sailed high and left of the net.

The Cougars got on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute when Cormier took advantage of a Wesmen turnover and fired a laser to the top shelf to notch the 15th goal of her prolific University of Regina career. Cormier's goal was followed by some more dangerous offensive play by the U of R with the wind dying down, but the Cougars weren't able to extend the lead before halftime.

But the Cougars would strike in quick succession in the second half to distance themselves from Winnipeg. Cormier added another goal in the 60th minute and Boesch pushed the lead to 3-0 with a fine header following a nice cross from Cormier.

After Kwasnicki's goal spoiled Possberg's shutout bid, Glass launched a rocket from over 35 yards out in the 81st minute that went over the Winnipeg keeper and prevented any chance of a Wesmen comeback.

The Cougars will play their second road match in as many days on Saturday against Manitoba (3:00 CDT) before returning home to Regina.

NOTES: Possberg surpasses Michelle Anderson as the University of Regina's all-time leader in wins ... Cormier's two goals give her 16 for her career ... Cormier needs just two more to overtake Jessica Waller as the school's all-time scoring leader.
