Box Score
The UBC Thunderbirds overcame a two-goal third-period deficit to score a 4-3 shootout win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night in Canada West men's hockey action at The Co-operators Centre.
UBC trailed 3-1 after 40 minutes, but Greg Fraser and Luke Lockhart both scored for the Thunderbirds and Cole Wilson's goal in the fourth round of the shootout gave UBC the weekend sweep. Brad Hoban also scored for UBC, while
Christian Magnus,
Tyler Penny, and
Ryan Dech replied for the Cougars. Steven Stanford made 33 saves in net for UBC in the win.
The win improves UBC's record to 7-10-1 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 9-10-1 after suffering their first overtime loss of the year.
UBC opened the scoring with a nice power play goal past the 12-minute mark of the first. Nate Fleming fed a pass through the slot to Hoban, who one-timed it past Cougar goalie
Lucas Gore for his fifth of the season. But the Cougars (10-10-0) struck just before , as
Ian McNulty won an offensive zone draw back to Magnus who snapped it low glove to tie it up with 10 seconds left in the opening period.
The Cougars then put together a fine 20 minutes in the second, scoring twice and firing 14 shots on net. Penny's goal came on a 3-on-1 where he showed some great patience with the puck, waiting for an eon before finally snapping a shot past Stanford to put the Cougars up 2-1.
Carter Selinger and Gore drew the assists on the goal, as the rush started following a pad save by Gore. Dech extended the lead to 3-1 two minutes before the second intermission, intercepting a clearing attempt around the boards by UBC and firing a shot from the edge of the right circle that beat Stanford for his first of the season and his second as a Cougar.
But UBC had an answer in the third. Hoban fed Fraser a pass down low and Fraser walked in front and scored on a backhand to cut the lead to 3-2 just past the midway mark of the period. And UBC tied the game on a great individual effort by Lockhart three minutes later, as the rookie forward split the defence with a nice toe drag and scored his eighth of the season.
UBC had a fine opportunity to win it in the second overtime when Wilson was sent in on a breakaway, but Gore made a right pad save to keep the game tied.
Cody Fowlie and Penny both scored for the Cougars in the shootout, but their goals were matched by UBC's Lockhart and Bardaro in the second and third rounds before Wilson won it in the fourth.
Gore ended up making 35 saves in regulation and overtime, as UBC held a slim 38-36 advantage in shots. UBC was 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Cougars were unsuccessful on their five opportunities with the man advantage - though two of those power plays were cut short by Regina penalties.
The Cougars are back in action next weekend with a pair of home games against Mount Royal, while UBC will start a four-game homestand with two games against the Alberta Golden Bears.
