The University of Regina's men's basketball team plays at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport for the second consecutive weekend as the Cougars host Winnipeg on Friday and Saturday.
The Cougars are coming off a home split last week, as they suffered an overtime loss to Thompson Rivers on Thursday before winning 72-64 over UBC Okanagan on Friday for their third win of the Canada West schedule.
Brandon Tull continued his sensational rookie season for the Cougars, leading all players in scoring and steals in both games last week. He scored 19 points and added four steals in Thursday's loss to TRU, then scored a career-high 24 points and matched his career best with five steals in Friday's 72-64 win over the Heat. Tull was an impressive 8-for-12 (66.7%) from the field in the victory, including going 2-for-4 from three-point land. The 6-4 guard leads all Canada West rookies with an average of 15.3 points per game this season.
Fourth-year guard
Brendan Hebert is also having a solid year for the U of R, as he's second on the team behind Tull with an average of 11.1 points per game and is second in Canada West with 62 assists on the season. Hebert has 316 assists in his four years at the U of R, which puts him just 32 shy of surpassing Zach Michell for the school's all-time lead.
Tull, Hebert,
Wesley Jones,
Will Tallman, and
Darius Mole comprised the starting five for the Cougars last weekend, while
Travis Sylvestre,
Matthew Augustine,
Jeremy Zver,
Ryan Delwo, and
Kade Marra all got minutes off the bench.
Winnipeg enters the weekend with a 7-5 Canada West record and two games up on Calgary (5-7) for fourth place in the Prairie Division standings. Steven Wesley is the Wesmen's go-to player, as the fifth-year forward is second in Canada West in points per game (19.4) and also averages 6.6 rebounds per game. Wesley, who's eclipsed the 20-point mark in eight of the team's 12 games this season, is shooting 51.5% from the field and is also a threat to step back and hit from the perimeter.
The Wesmen return to the court next weekend with a home-and-home against Brandon, while the Cougars hit the road for the first time in the second half of the Canada West schedule for two away games at Manitoba.
