Box Score

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team pushed its win streak to four matches with a quick three-set win over Saskatchewan on Saturday night in Saskatoon.

The Cougars opened with a 25-21 win in the first set and survived two set points while taking full control of the match with a 27-25 victory in the second. The third set was close until Desiree Ates and Leah Shevkenek served the U of R to an 11-1 run, leading to a match-clinching 25-12 victory.

The Cougars improve to 7-9 with the victory and are now in seventh place in the Canada West standings ahead of Saskatchewan (7-9) based on sets won/sets lost differential.

Michelle Sweeting led the Cougars offensively with 12 kills and no errors on 21 attacks for a blistering .571 hitting percentage. The fourth-year middle also filled the stat sheet with six blocks, four digs, and three service aces in the victory, while Ates added eight kills and nine digs and Tori Glynn had nine kills. Shevkenek had 34 assists and six digs while controlling a U of R offence that hit .340 for the match, including .458 in the third set alone.

Candace Hueser led Saskatchewan with 12 kills and four blocks.

The Cougars now have four consecutive home matches, starting next Friday and Saturday against Manitoba (10-6). The Bisons were ranked No. 8 in last week's CIS Top Ten and, like the Cougars, will come into the weekend riding a four-match winning streak after two wins each over Calgary and Mount Royal to start the second half of the conference schedule.

NOTES: The Cougars have now won 15 consecutive matches over Saskatchewan and haven't lost to the Huskies since 2006.
