Ates sets U of R kill record in sweep over Thompson Rivers

Honoured as part of Senior Night prior to the match, fifth-year outside hitter Desiree Ates broke the University of Regina's single-season kills record as the Cougars swept Thompson Rivers in three sets on Friday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Ates had 11 kills during the match to give her 286 for the season, which leads the entire CIS and is four more than the previous U of R record set by Tammy Julé during the 2006-07 campaign.

The Cougars needed less than an hour to take care of business, winning 25-12, 25-12, and 25-5 to secure a critical late-season victory and improve to 9-10 on the season.

Michelle Sweeting had a huge game for the U of R, matching Ates with 11 kills on just 13 attacks for a blistering .846 hitting percentage. Molly Wade-Cummings (5-0-6, .833) and Tori Glynn (7-0-9, .778) also had fine percentages for the U of R in the win. Chelsea Ziolkowski added eight kills, while Ates also led all players with 10 digs to notch the lone double-double of the contest. Leah Shevkenek had 35 assists and both Shevkenek and Glynn collected eight digs.

Kaitlin Lomas and Carly Nelson both led Thompson Rivers with four kills, while Morgan Kolasa led all players at the net with four blocks. WolfPack libero Gabby Fortin had a team-high six digs as TRU falls to 0-19 on the season.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night (5:00) at the CKHS.

NOTES: Megan Semeniuk was recognized along with Ates during Senior Night festivities prior to the match ... Semeniuk had five digs and three assists in the win.
