Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars downed 5-2 by Golden Bears

The Alberta Golden Bears outshot the University of Regina men's hockey team 51-14 en route to a 5-2 victory at The Co-operators Centre on Saturday night.

T.J. Foster had two goals and an assist and Travis Toomey pitched in a pair of goals for the visiting Golden Bears.
Levko Koper added a goal and a helper for the No. 1-ranked Alberta squad.

Mitch Kilgore had a strong showing in his first-career start for Regina, stopping 46 of the 50 shots he faced.

The theme of firsts continued for the Cougars as Devon McMullen and and Dylen McKinlay each netted their first-career goals for the Cougars.

The Golden Bears outshot the Cougars 15-3 in the first period, but Kilgore stood on his head and kept all 15 shots out.
Kilgore and the Cougars killed off a pair of Alberta powerplays to keep the game scoreless through one period.

The floodgates opened in the second period and the two teams combined for five goals in the frame.

The Cougars went to the powerplay early in the second after a Jordan Hickmott interference penalty and wasted no time with the man advantage.
Regina won the face-off and a shot was sent towards the net. The puck found its way to the back of the net and McKinlay was credited with his first goal as a Cougar. Carter Selinger (pictured) assisted on the marker.

The Golden Bears replied less than two minutes later while killing another penalty. A Cougar defender slipped trying to bring the puck up the ice and Foster took it in on the breakaway. He put a move on Kilgore and went top shelf with the forehand to even the score at 1.

Alberta took the lead a few minutes later off a strong drive to the net from Foster. Foster got around a Cougar defender and baited Kilgore to the side of the net before firing a pass in front that Toomey had no problem converting. Koper also assisted on the goal that put the Golden Bears up 2-1.

Alberta continued their pressure a few minutes later after Selinger was whistled for interference. The Golden Bears went to the powerplay and capitalized when Koper batted in a rebound following a dazzling glove save by Kilgore.

The scoring continued in the second as the Cougars drew closer thanks to a goal from McMullen. McMullen was streaking down the right side and took a long pass from Skylar Hladun before going short side and beating Luke Siemens.
Zach McPhee also assisted on McMullen's first-career goal and the Alberta lead was cut to 3-2.

The Golden Bears started the third period on the powerplay, but a couple of nice saves by Kilgore kept it a one-goal game. The period continued at a furious pace, with only a couple of whistles to slow down the back-and-forth action.

Just over halfway through the third Hladun deflected a shot from the point that beat Siemens for what looked like the tying goal, but the play was waved off by the referee for a high stick.

Hladun's deflection was as good a chance as the Cougars would get in the final frame, and Alberta would stretch their lead with less than three minutes left. A low back-handed shot by Toomey slipped through Kilgore's pads and the Golden Bears took a 4-2 lead.

Foster potted an empty-netter with 33 seconds left to expand the lead even more, and the 5-2 score would end up a final.

The Cougars fall to 0-6 with the loss and Alberta moves to 5-1 with the win.

The Cougars will travel to Calgary next weekend for a pair of games against the No. 7-ranked Calgary Dinos.
