The Cougars (0-6) lost a pair of hard-fought games last weekend against the top-ranked Alberta Golden Bears. The Cougars stuck with Alberta on Friday, losing 2-1 after T.J. Foster scored for the Bears with just over three minutes left.
Alberta showed why they are the top team in the country on Saturday, as they downed the Cougars 5-2.
Calgary sits at 4-2 after sweeping the Lethbridge Pronghorns last weekend. The Dinos have registered 20 goals so far this season compared to the Cougars six.
The Cougars have seen some bright spots in their young players early in the season, with rookies
Tyler Giebel,
Dylen McKinlay and
Devon McMullen (pictured) each finding the back of the net.
Veterans
John Sonntag and
Tyler Penny lead the team with two points each.
Mitch Kilgore looked good in his first Canada West start on Saturday, stopping 46 of a whopping 50 shots he faced.
Lucas Gore has made five starts so far and has stopped 96 shots between the pipes.
The DInos are led by fifth-year defenceman Kodie Curran, who has notched three goals and nine points so far this season. Goalies Kris Lazaruk and Jacob DeSerres both boast 2-1 records and save percentages hovering around .930 for the Dinos.
"Our season so far has been a bit deceiving, we've had some tough breaks and we could very easily be 4-2 instead of 0-6," head coach
Todd Johnson said. "This weekend will be tough competition for us but if we play as a team and compete together I think we have a good chance."
Friday's start is scheduled for 7 p.m., and Saturday's game is slated for a 6 p.m. puck drop.
