Live statsThe University of Regina women's soccer team will head to Saskatoon this weekend for their final set of regular season games against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
The Cougars, who enter the weekend with a 5-3-2 record, will need a least one win and one tie to overtake the Huskies (5-2-3) for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Prairie Division.
The Huskies sit with 18 points to the Cougars' 17, so Regina will need to collect at least four out of the possible six points to clinch a playoff berth.
The Cougars are coming off a weekend in which they split two games with the MacEwan University Griffins. Saturday's match displayed a strong defensive game from both teams, which resulted in a 2-0 win for MacEwan.
Regina bounced back on Sunday, as
Celia Michaud and
Daniela Castro (pictured) each tallied their first markers of the season to lead the Cougars to a 2-1 win over the Griffins.
The two goals were the first shots this season that had beaten MacEwan keeper Rebecca Reif, as the Griffins fell to 7-2-1.
The Cougars have seen a balanced scoring attack this season, as ten different players have earned goals.
Veronica Boesch and rookie
Sarah Moroziuk lead the team with three goals and eight points each.
Keeper
Kacey McFee has started all ten games for the Cougars, and her 46 saves on the season rank her sixth in the conference.
The Huskies are propelled by the conference leader in goals, Jannelle Zapski. Zapski has 10 tallies on the season, followed closely by teammate Erica Hindmarsh who sits in third in the conference with seven markers.
Cara Santaga is Saskatchewan's starting keeper, and she has allowed just six goals in eight starts this season.Â
"We'll need to play consistently and be tactically aware of the moments that we need to take advantage of," head coach
Bob Maltman said. "The Huskies are a strong team but we're confident that we match up with them well and if we can capitalize on our opportunities we'll have a good chance to end up in the playoffs."
"I'm also very happy with the way we have handled adversity throughout the season," Maltman added. "We have a tight-knit group and the girls bring out the best in each other."
Both games are scheduled for noon at PotashCorp Park in Saskatoon.
