Live videoLive statsThe University of Regina women's hockey team is set to travel to Vancouver for a pair of Canada West games against the fourth-ranked UBC Thunderbirds this weekend.
The Cougars (1-2-2-1) are coming off a split from last weekend when they hosted the No. 10-ranked Calgary Dinos. The Dinos bested the Cougars in the Friday game, winning 5-3, but the Cougars fought back on Saturday and outlasted the Dinos with a 1-0 shootout win.
Rookie
Emma Waldenberger played well on the weekend, registering her first-career Canada West goal on Friday and then netting the shootout winner on Saturday.
"Emma is a natural goal scorer and it was good for her to get her first one," head coach
Sarah Hodges said. "We think her play against Calgary will get her going; she has already adapted to the speed and style of play so we're excited for her to keep improving."
Carleen Meszaros (pictured) and
Kylie Gavelin also earned markers in Friday's contest.
Gavelin leads the team with four goals this season.
The Cougars were led by some strong goalkeeping on the weekend, as
Toni Ross made 28 saves in Friday's loss and
Jennifer Schmidt stopped 31 shots on Saturday.
UBC enters the weekend with a 3-1-1-1 record, after splitting two games at Lethbridge last week. The Thunderbirds also have a pair of wins against Mount Royal and a split against Saskatchewan to their credit.
Tatiana Rafter is the leading scorer for the Thunderbirds, and sits tied for third in the conference with nine points so far. Teammate Sarah Casorso is in fifth place with eight points this season.
"We've played ranked teams the past two weekends, so our approach doesn't change much," Hodges added. "We'll focus on our own game and things will take care of themselves."
Both Friday's and Saturday's games are set for 8 p.m. Saskatchewan time starts.
