Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Thunderbirds top Cougars 4-2

The University of Regina men's hockey team was downed 4-2 by the UBC Thunderbirds in Canada West action in Regina on Friday.

Linden Saip and Luke Lockhart each had a goal and an assist for the visitors, who also got markers from Anthony Bardaro and Nick Buonassisi.
Cody Fowlie (pictured) and Ian McNulty replied for the Cougars.

The Thunderbirds went to the powerplay with just over five minutes remaining in the first period, but it was Regina that found the back of the net as Fowlie notched his second goal of the season. The second-year forward intercepted a pass and took advantage, racing past a UBC defender who lost his footing. His attempt at sending the puck in front went off a Thunderbird skate past Matt Hewitt to give Regina a 1-0 lead.

UBC answered with 14:18 on the clock in the second, on a shorthanded goal of their own. The Thunderbirds forced a turnover and found themselves on a 2-on-1, where Buonassisi capitalized off a nice feed from Lockhart. Saip also assisted on Buonassisi's sixth goal of the season.

The Thunderbirds struck again less than five minutes later when the two teams were playing four-on-four. Saip intercepted a pass in the neutral zone, streaked down the right side and roofed it over Mitch Kilgore's shoulder to give UBC a 2-1 lead.

McNulty replied for the Cougars with 6:42 on the clock as he grabbed a rebound and fired the loose puck past Hewitt. Dylen McKinlay and Christian Magnus were credited with assists on the powerplay tally, which marked McNulty's first of the season and tied the game at 2.

It took UBC just over a minute to strike in the third period, as Bardaro netted his second of the season off a pass in front from Ben Schmidt.

Lockhart added an empty netter with eight seconds to play to seal the win for the Thunderbirds.

Kilgore made 23 saves for Regina, including 18 stops in the second frame.
17 of the 28 shots that Hewitt faced came in the first period, and he finished the night with 26 saves in the win.

Regina falls to 0-9-0 on the season while UBC improves to 5-2-2 with the win.

The teams are to do battle again on Saturday evening, with game time set for 7 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre.
