Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dinos defeat Cougars at CKHS; salvage weekend split

The No. 10-ranked Calgary Dinos pulled away from the Regina Cougars in the fourth quarter and scored a 70-62 win to earn a split in Canada West men's basketball action on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The two teams traded leads 14 times over the first three quarters before Calgary put together its best run of the weekend. The Dinos went on a 17-2 run over a six-minute span in the second half, turning what had been a one-point Cougar lead late in the third into a 14-point Calgary advantage midway through the fourth.

The Cougars actually scored the next six points to cut the deficit to eight, but by that time there was barely a minute left in the contest and Calgary hit four free throws in the final minute to put the game away.

Calgary's Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson flirted with a triple-double and ended up with 17 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Rookie forward Lars Schlueter added 14 points for the Dinos – almost all of which came on his game-high four triples – and Josh Owen-Thomas came off the bench to score 10 for Calgary.

Jonathan Tull led the Cougars in scoring for the third time in six Canada West games this season, ending up with a game-high 21 points and pulling down nine rebounds to fall just short of a double-double. His younger brother Brandon Tull did end up with a double-double – the first of his CIS career – after finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Will Tallman contributed eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the U of R.

Calgary improves to 5-1 on the season, its only blemish coming on Friday night against the Cougars. The Dinos, who remain tied with Manitoba for second place in the Pioneer Division, will now prepare for two consecutive home weekends beginning with a pair of showdowns with the Bisons next Friday and Saturday.

The Cougars (2-4) will be back in action next weekend with a pair of road games at Lethbridge.
