Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars run win streak to four with win over Calgary

The University of Regina's women's basketball team won its fourth consecutive game on Saturday, defeating the visiting Calgary Dinos by a 71-58 margin at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars led from wire to wire, but Calgary hung around for long enough to make things interesting down the stretch. The U of R opened the game on a 12-2 run thanks to a pair of triples by Katie Polischuk, though the Dinos responded after a timeout to score the next six. The Cougars led by eight after the opening quarter and 40-33 at the break, then led by double digits for almost the entire third.

In the fourth, the Cougars led by as many as 14 points but Calgary went on a 9-1 run over a five-minute span to make it a two-possession game midway through the final period. That was as close as the Dinos could come, though, as the U of R scored 10 of the game's last 13 points to put away the victory.

Four of the Cougars' five starters hit double figures in points, led by 16 from Alyssia Kajati and 15 by Katie Polischuk. Charlotte Kot finished with 13 points, while Jennilea Coppola had 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds to fall just short of a double-double. Kehlsie Crone was the only U of R starter not to score at least 10 but was effective in other ways, ending up with eight rebounds, seven assists, and five points.

Brianna Ghali came off the bench to lead Calgary with 11 points, while Jessica Thielen and rookie Shinelle Handzuik both scored nine. Thielen also had a team-high seven rebounds for Calgary, which falls to 2-4 with the loss.

The Cougars (4-2) now sit in a tie with Winnipeg for third place in the Pioneer Division standings and will hit the road next weekend for a pair of games at Lethbridge. Calgary has four consecutive home games upcoming, including two next weekend against Manitoba.
