Regina (3-5-3-1) is riding a four-game win streak and come off two overtime victories against the Saskatchewan Huskies last weekend.
The Cougars downed the Huskies 3-2 on Friday before coming home and outlasting the Huskies 1-0 on Friday.
Emma Waldenberger was the overtime hero on Friday, as she scored just a minute and eight seconds into the extra frame off assists from
Brooklyn Moskowy and
Nikki Watters-Matthes. Moskowy and
Caitlin Dempsey (pictured) were the other goal scorers for the Cougars.
Saturday's game was a defensive battle that featured outstanding goaltending from
Jennifer Schmidt and Cassidy Hendricks. It was Schmidt who ended up with the win, as
Kylie Gavelin scored her eighth of the season in the overtime period.
Schmidt's shutout marks the seventh of her Canada West career, which moves her into sole possession of first place on the all-time Cougar list.
"Jen is very deserving of the record, she's been a very consistent performer for us for the past number of years and she can be a real game-changer," head coach
Sarah Hodges said. "It makes things a lot easier on us when we have her behind us playing at such a high level."
The Cougars are led by Gavelin, who is fourth in Canada West with eight goals. Kostenko, Moskowy and
Bailey Braden are each tied for second on the team with five points on the campaign.
"We've seen strong production and multiple opportunities from every line so far this season," Hodges added. "We've started to get a feel for each other offensively and the defence is coming together too."
Schmidt and
Toni Ross are likely to continue splitting time in net for the Cougars, as both goaltenders have registered four wins on the season. Schmidt is currently leading Canada West with a .943 save percentage.
Mount Royal (0-1-9-2) is coming off a pair of losses in a home-and-home set against Lethbridge last weekend.
"They're a good team, better than their record indicates, so we're going to have to be ready to compete," Hodges said.
Mount Royal is led by Sarah Weninger, who has tallied six points in 12 games this season.
The two teams are to battle on Friday at 8 p.m. Saskatchewan time and again on Saturday at 4 p.m. Saskatchewan time.
