Cougars extend win streak to five games, down Mount Royal 3-2

The University of Regina women's hockey team escaped with a 3-2 double-overtime victory in Calgary against Mount Royal University on Friday night.

Meghan Sherven and Alexis Larson (pictured) each scored their first goals of the season for Regina in the win. Kylie Gavelin also chipped in with her ninth of the season. Triston Riemer notched a pair of assists and Larson also registered a helper.
Megan Carver and Delaney Edwards replied for MRU.

It was Gavelin who opened the scoring in the second period as she deflected a point shot by Nikki Watters-Matthes in front of the Mount Royal net, putting Regina on the board with a powerplay marker.

Mount Royal rattled off the next two goals, one late in the second and another early in the third, to take a 2-1 lead.

Sherven tied things up with just over five minutes remaining in regulation, off feeds from Larson and Riemer. Her goal pushed things into overtime, where the Cougars outshot MRU 4-2 in the first extra frame but could not beat Emma Pincott.

The Cougars went on the powerplay in the second overtime, after Janessa Jenkins was sent to the box for slashing. Regina was patient with the man advantage, and the winning marker came thanks to two defenders.
Larson and Riemer worked the puck back and forth at the point, while Bailey Braden and Stephanie Sawchuk made their way to the front of the net. When the forwards were in position, Larson snapped a wrist-shot towards that net that beat the screened Pincott and gave the Cougars the win.

Jennifer Schmidt won her fifth consecutive game in net for the Cougars, stopping 31 shots. Pincott also made 31 saves for Mount Royal.

Regina improves to 3-6-3-1 on the season, stretching their win streak to five games. Mount Royal drops to 0-1-9-3 with the loss.

The rematch is slated for Saturday afternoon, with puck drop scheduled for 4 p.m. Saskatchewan time.
