Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars down No. 10 Mount Royal

The University of Regina men's hockey team scored three goals in the third period on their way to defeating No. 10-ranked Mount Royal University 4-3 in Canada West action at The Co-operators Centre on Saturday afternoon.

Brody Luhning (pictured) had a goal and a helper for the Cougars, who move to 4-11-1 with the win. Ward Szucki, Tyler Giebel and Liam Brennan also scored for Regina.
Matthew Brown had a goal and an assist for MRU, and Cody Cartier had two assists.
Tyler Fiddler and Billy Marshall also scored for Mount Royal.

Fiddler opened the scoring 9:34 into the first period, as he took a feed in front from Cartier and one-timed it past Mitch Kilgore. Brown also collected an assist on Fiddler's sixth goal of the season.

Regina replied with three and a half minutes left in the second frame, as Luhning came in over the line and waited for some traffic in front before wiring a wrist shot over Cam Lanigan's blocker. Ian McNulty and Mark Schneider were credited with assists on Luhning's second of the campaign.

The tie game lasted less than three minutes, as Brown forced a turnover deep in the Cougars zone and took a feed from Cartier before netting his seventh of the year. Brown's marker came with just 21 seconds left in the second period and put MRU back in the lead.

Regina clawed back and tied things up again in the third period, as Szucki sent a low shot on net from the point that slid right under Lanigan, who was hampered by a screen in front. Hladun and Miguel Pereira assisted on the goal.

Once again, the game didn't stay tied for long, as Regina went to the powerplay after Jamie King was sent off for tripping. The Cougars finally cracked Mount Royal's penalty kill as Giebel notched his third of the season. The goal came after Luhning put a shot on net from the point, but the blast was blocked in front. Christian Magnus came up with the loose puck and slipped it over to Giebel who made no mistake at the side of the empty cage and put the Cougars in the lead.

Brennan added an empty-netter with 46 seconds to play to make it 4-2, but MRU responded with a quick goal from Marshall with 12 seconds to play. Time ran out on MRU, which falls to 10-6 with the loss.

The Cougars outshot Mount Royal 35-24 on the game, and Kilgore collected his second win of the season by making 21 saves.
Lanigan stopped 31 shots in the loss and received some help from the iron, as Regina ringed three shots of the post on the night.

Regina will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns next weekend for a pair of games at The Co-operators Centre.
