The University of Regina women's hockey team defeated the hometown Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday night, registering a 3-2 victory in the first game of the weekend set.
Carleen Meszaros,
Brooklyn Moskowy (pictured) and
Bailey Braden were the goal-scorers for Regina. Jenae Culp and Aisliin Kooistra replied for the Pronghorns.
Meszaros was the one who opened the scoring, as her slapshot from the point beat a screened Crystal Patterson to give Regina an early lead.
After Kooistra replied for the Pronghorns, Moskowy re-established the Cougars lead with her third of the Canada West schedule. Moskowy showed patience in the slot, and buried a high shot over the glove of Patterson to put Regina back on top.
Lethbridge would answer again, as Culp took a smooth pass from Sarah Spence on a 2-on-1 and potted her team-leading sixth of the season early in the second period.
The Cougars continued to press, and eventually it would pay off.
Triston Riemer blasted a shot from the point mid-way through the third period, that deflected off Braden and past Patterson, for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal.
Moskowy collected an assist on the goal, marking her second multi-point game of the season.
Jennifer Schmidt got the win in net for Regina, notching her sixth win of the season. Schmidt made 28 shots, while Patterson stopped 37 for Lethbridge.
Regina moves to 4-6-4-1 with the win, while Lethbridge falls to 3-0-12-0 with the loss.
The two teams will face off again on Saturday evening, with the game scheduled for 8:00 Saskatchewan time.
