The University of Regina's women's volleyball team lost a three-set decision to No. 3-ranked Trinity Western on Thursday night in the first match of a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series in Langley, B.C.
The Cougars will now need to defeat the Spartans on both Friday and Saturday to advance to the Canada West Final Four, which will be hosted by UBC next weekend.
Sophie Carpentier had a match-high 14 kills for Trinity Western, while Alicia Perrin chipped in with 10 kills while leading all players at the net with eight blocks. Vanessa Cornwall and Lauren Moncks split the setting duties in the win for the Spartans.
Desiree Ates led the Cougars in both kills (8) and digs (10) in the loss, while
Michelle Sweeting had a team-high seven blocks.
Trinity Western led from almost the beginning of both the first two sets, winning 25-19 in the first and finishing the second set with six straight points to claim a 25-16 victory. The third featured 10 tie scores and four lead changes before another late Spartans surge gave them the match, as Trinity Western closed out the set on an 8-1 run which turned a two-point deficit into a 25-20 win.
The two teams will meet in Match 2 of the quarterfinal series on Friday night. First serve is scheduled for 8 p.m. (PST).
