Cougars swept by Trinity Western in quarterfinals

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team was swept 25-16, 25-16, 25-19 by No. 3-ranked Trinity Western on Friday night in the second match of a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series in Langley, B.C.

The win gives Trinity Western a 2-0 series victory as the Spartans qualify for next weekend's Canada West Final Four hosted by UBC.

Sophie Carpentier led the Spartans in kills for the second consecutive night, ending up with a match-high 12 while adding five digs. Alicia Perrin had seven kills and tied Chelsea Tancon for the team lead with four blocks, while Vanessa Cornwall had 23 assists and Kristen Moncks tied for the match high with eight digs.

Desiree Ates led Regina with eight kills, while Chelsea Ziolkowski had seven. Leah Shevkenek had 21 assists and Megan Semeniuk tied Moncks with eight digs.

The Cougars will now have next weekend off as they prepare to host the 2014 CIS Women's Volleyball Championship at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport on the U of R campus. The tournament starts Friday, Feb. 28 and runs through Sunday, Mar. 2.
