The University of Regina Cougars women's soccer team handed the No. 8-ranked Calgary Dinos their first defeat of the season on Sunday with a 1-0 victory.
The victory marks the third time in school history that the Cougars have beaten a ranked opponent.
Veronica Boesch (pictured) was the one who put the Cougars on the scoresheet, as she scored on a penalty kick in the 68th minute.
The shot, which came after
Celia Michaud was tackled in the box, was placed just inside the right post outside of Samantha Chang-Foidl's reach.
With the goal, Boesch ties
Sarah Moroziuk for the team lead with three markers on the season.
The game featured some spectacular goalkeeping from both
Kacey McFee and Chang-Foidl.
Calgary peppered McFee with nine shots on net, and Regina countered with seven.
McFee's efforts were highlighted by a save on a sharp-angled breakaway attempt from Andrea Stinson in the 83rd minute that preserved the win.
Boesch led the Cougars with four shots on net in the match.
Lauren Vernon managed six shots for the Dinos, which fall to 4-1-3 with the loss.
Michaud,
Kayla McDonald,
Molly Glass and
Racquel Marshall played the full 90 minutes for the Cougars.
The Cougars improve to 4-2-2 with the win, and are to play host to the MacEwan University Griffins on Oct. 11 and 12.
