Box Score The University of Regina Cougars women's soccer team defeated the hometown University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 in Canada West action on Saturday night.
Veronica Boesch opened the scoring in the ninth minute for the Cougars, as she took a feed from rookie midfielder Sarah Moroziuk and put a well-placed shot past Wesmen keeper Taylor Thorkelsson.
The Cougars had a great opportunity to add to their lead in the 18th minute as Winnipeg was called for a foul in the box and Kayla McDonald stepped to the penalty spot. McDonald powered the shot past Thorkelsson but over the crossbar and the score remained 1-0 for Regina.
Less than a minute later, Winnipeg striker Chelsea Kwasnicki stripped the ball from Cougar defender Molly Glass and fired a shot on net. Regina goalkeeper Kacey McFee got a hand on the shot but the rebound bounced directly to Wesmen midfielder Danielle Bulloch.
Bulloch made no mistake and found the open net to tie the score.
Boesch had another good chance for Regina towards the end of the first half, as she fired a powerful shot towards the bottom left corner of the net. Thorkelsson made a spectacular save and tipped the shot wide.
The score remained tied until the extra time in the first half when Boesch sent Moroziuk in on a breakaway and she picked the top right corner, beating Thorkelsson to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
Regina carried the momentum into the second half, as rookie forward Olivia Bolen scored an unassisted goal less than a minute after play resumed, making the score 3-1 for the visitors.Â
Neither team gathered much traction early in the second half, until a Winnipeg chance coming in the 56th minute as Bulloch rang a shot off the post.
Winnipeg striker Chelsea Kwasnicki drew Winnipeg closer in the 73rd minute, as she took a pass from Bulloch and scored her first goal of the season.
Winnipeg had another good chance in the 82nd minute, but Kayla Jacobsen's shot sailed just wide of the left post.
Following that, the Cougars dominated the time of possession to hold on for the win.
McFee made a total of eight saves for the Cougars. Thorkelsson stopped two shots for Winnipeg.
The Cougars (1-1-0) are set to play host to Alberta and Mount Royal next weekend as they open their home schedule at the U of R field. Saturday's game vs. Alberta is scheduled for a noon kick-off.
