The University of Regina's women's basketball team had a huge second quarter and led the rest of the way in a 77-68 road win over Trinity Western on Saturday night in Langley, B.C. as the Cougars completed a weekend sweep over the Spartans.
Â
The Cougars were outscored 20-14 in the first quarter and trailed by as much as eight points in the second, but ended the half on a 13-0 run which turned a five-point deficit into an eight-point advantage at the break.
Â
The momentum continued in the third quarter as the Cougars scored the first three buckets to make it a 19-0 run, and pushed the lead to 21 at one point early in the fourth. But Trinity Western made things interesting with a big run of its own, scoring 18 of the next 19 points to make it a one-possession game with just under a minute to go.
Â
But after the Spartans cut the lead to three,
Caitlin Zacharias responded with a huge triple to get the lead back up to six, and after a defensive stop
Taylor Pelletier hit two free throws to put the Cougars up by eight with 30 seconds to go.
Â
Alyssia Kajati poured in a career-high 25 points for the Cougars and pulled down nine rebounds to just miss out on a double-double.
Charlotte Kot ended up with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her second Canada West double-double of the season, while
Katie Polischuk scored 11.
Â
Jessica Brown came off the bench to lead Trinity Western with 16 points.
Â
Winners of 10 consecutive conference games, the Cougars (10-2) will put the streak on the line next weekend with a pair of difficult road games at No. 5-ranked Saskatchewan.
