Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

King and McKinlay extend streaks, Cougars win in double overtime

The University of Regina men's hockey team outlasted the UBC Thunderbirds for a 3-2 double-overtime victory in Vancouver on Friday night.

Sanfred King had a goal and an assist, and Brock Appleyard and Ian McNulty also scored for the Cougars. Lucas Gore (pictured) stopped 40 shots between the pipes to earn the win.

Cole Wilson and Luke Lockhart scored UBC's goals. Matt Hewitt made 22 saves for the Thunderbirds.

The Cougars trailed 1-0 heading into the third after a first-period goal from UBC's Cole Wilson. Regina got on the board just 66 seconds into the third period to tie things up. It was Appleyard scoring his second of the season off assists from Tyler Henry and Carter Selinger to knot the game up at 1-1.

Regina would take the lead mid-way through the third frame, as King extended his goal-scoring streak to four games with a sneaky little flip shot that went over Hewitt who was sprawling to make the save. Dylen McKinlay notched an assist on King's eighth of the season, extending his own point streak to six games. McKinlay has a point in every game in 2015 for the Cougars.

UBC would tie it up late in the third, as Dillon Wagner put a slap shot on net and Lockhart banged in the rebound.

The initial overtime period solved nothing so the teams went to a 3-on-3 double overtime. UBC controlled the puck for most of the second extra frame but the Cougars caught a break on an odd-man rush. King put a shot on net and it was McNulty who was there to bang it in for the win. Brody Luhning also recorded an assist on McNulty's fifth of the season.

With the win, the Cougars move to 8-15-2 and draw closer to the sixth and final Canada West playoff spot. That spot is currently occupied by the Saskatchewan Huskies, who lost 2-1 in double overtime to the Manitoba Bisons on Friday.

The two teams will battle again on Saturday evening.
