Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars eliminated from postseason race with loss to Alberta

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team was eliminated from Canada West postseason contention with a three-set loss to No. 2 Alberta on Saturday night in Edmonton.

The Pandas controlled the entire match, hitting .309 as a team and winning by scores of 25-11, 25-19, and 25-13 to improve their conference record to 16-4 on the season.

The loss drops Regina's record to 6-14. The Cougars could technically win out and catch seventh-place Manitoba – which currently occupies the final postseason berth – but only if the Bisons lose all four remaining matches, which would push MacEwan up to 11 wins and ahead of both teams.

Alberta was led in kills by Meg Casault, who finished with 15 and a .308 hitting percentage. Jessie Niles led all players with 16 digs for the Pandas, while Mariah Walsh (21 assists) and Eryn Orysiuk (11) split the setting duties.

Lindsay Braul piled up 14 digs for the Cougars, while Michelle Sweeting had 11 kills and four blocks to lead the team in both categories.

The Cougars are back in Regina next weekend to host MacEwan in their final home matches of the season. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

NOTES: Sweeting needs just six kills to pass Beth Clark as the University of Regina's all-time leader ... Sweeting is now tied with Clark for the school's all-time lead with 341 career blocks ... Sweeting needs six service aces to move past Clark for the U of R's career lead in that category as well ... Molly Wade-Cummings now has 86 blocks on the season, which is tied with Sweeting for a school single-season record ... Sweeting is just behind Wade-Cummings with 82 blocks on the year.
