Cougars open 2015 play with loss at Mount Royal

The University of Regina men's hockey team opened its 2015 schedule with a 4-1 loss at the hands of Mount Royal University in Calgary on Saturday night.

Matthew Brown, Tyler Fiddler, Tyler Jewitt and Sebastien Pare scored for MRU. Tyler Penny (pictured) replied for the Cougars with his third marker of the season.

Lucas Gore took the loss in net, stopping 27 shots. Cam Lanigan made 22 saves in the win.

Pare opened the scoring early in the second period off assists from Fiddler and Cody Cartier. 

Penny replied later in the second, evening the game 1-1. Dylen McKinlay and Austin Bourhis collected assists on the goal.

Brown's goal came midway through the third period, giving the home team a 2-1 lead. The Cougars opted to pull Gore late in the third frame, and Fiddler potted an empty netter.

With Gore back in net and the game out of reach, MRU struck again as Jewitt netted his third of the season on a late powerplay.

Regina drops to 6-12-1 with the loss. Mount Royal improves to 13-6. The two teams will face off again on Sunday afternoon, with game time scheduled for 4 p.m. Saskatchewan time.
