The University of Regina women's hockey team found themselves trailing for most of the game but managed a miraculous 6-5 overtime win against the hometown Calgary Dinos on Friday night.
The Cougars trailed 4-1 in the third period before rattling off three-straight goals to even things up again. Iya Gavrilova scored her second of the game to put the Dinos back on top, but a last minute goal by
Natasha Kostenko tied things up again to send it to overtime. 30 seconds in to the extra frame,
Kylie Gavelin scored her 11th of the season to complete the comeback and give the Cougars the win.
Carleen Meszaros (pictured),
Nikki Watters-Matthes,
Jordan Doram and
Stephanie Sawchuk also scored for the Cougars, who move to 5-7-9-2 on the season.
Jenna Smith had a hat trick for the Dinos, and Gavrilova added to her Canada West-leading goal total, with her 20th and 21st goals of the campaign.
Calgary jumped ahead with powerplay goals late in the first and midway through the second periods to take a 2-0 lead, but Watters-Matthes scored her first of the season on the powerplay to make it 2-1. The Dinos replied 80 seconds later to restore their two goal lead heading to the third period.
Smith completed her hat trick by opening the scoring on the powerplay in the third, but
Jordan Doram scored 29 seconds later off assists from
Meghan Sherven and
Tessa Wilson to make the score 4-2.
Sawchuk and Meszaros scored less than three minutes apart to tie the game up 4-4, but Gavrilova squashed Regina's momentum with her second of the night to put the Dinos back on top.Â
The Cougars elected to pull
Toni Ross for the extra attacker, and the strategy paid off, as Kostenko scored her fourth of the season thanks to helpers from Gavelin and
Alexis Larson. Kostenko's marker came with 1:08 on the clock and would send the game into overtime knotted at 5-5.
Regina wasted no time in the extra frame, as Gavelin sealed the deal just 28 seconds in to give the Cougars the 6-5 decision.
Ross made 24 saves on the night while her counterpart, Hayley Dowling, made 26.
The two teams will battle again on Saturday afternoon, with puck drop scheduled for 3 p.m. MST.
