The University of Regina's men's basketball team led at halftime and after three quarters, but couldn't hang on for the win as the Cougars lost 85-79 to Concordia on Friday night in the second game of the Graham Shootout in Saskatoon.
The Cougars trailed by as many as nine points in the first quarter, but went on a 13-0 run in the second to take the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game. Regina led 41-39 at halftime and held a 66-65 advantage after three quarters, but Concordia scored the first three buckets of the fourth and led the rest of the way.
It was a one-possession game as late as with three minutes left in the game, but a quick 8-1 run by Concordia over the next 90 seconds - including a pair of three-point daggers by Jalel Webb - essentially put the game out of reach.
Ricardo Monge had a team-high 19 points and was one of five Concordia players to score in double figures. Ken Beaulieu scored 15 points, Webb finished with 14, Michael Fosu had 13, and Schneiders Suffrard added 12 off the bench.
Alex Igual (pictured) led the Cougars in both points (18) and rebounds (9) and also added three assists, while
Jonathan Tull scored 13 points and
Brandon Tull chipped in with 10. The U of R enjoyed a 40-29 advantage in rebounds over Concordia and a 22-9 edge in second-chance points, but ultimately couldn't overcome the Stingers shooting 46% as a team from three-point range and 49% from the field overall.
The Cougars will finish off the Graham Shootout on Saturday night against host Saskatchewan.
