Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late run pushes Saskatchewan past Cougars at Graham Shootout

An improbable 14-0 run in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter propelled host Saskatchewan to a 90-87 win over the University of Regina on Saturday night in the final game of the Graham Shootout men's basketball non-conference tournament in Saskatoon.

The Cougars held an 87-76 lead with two minutes to go after a three-point play by Brian Ofori, but the visitors weren't able to seal the deal. Saskatchewan responded with a triple by rookie guard Jauquin Bennett-Boire, then got a bucket by Alex Unruh and another three by Evan Ostertag to draw within three with a minute left.

After a pair of missed Regina free throws, Saskatchewan tied it up with yet another three by Bennett-Boire to tie it up. The Huskies got a defensive stop, then won it on one final three-pointer at the buzzer – this time by Ostertag.

Ostertag finished with a game-high 23 points for Saskatchewan, which won the tournament with a 2-1 record. Bennett-Boire finished with 17, while Shawn Lathan added 13.

The Cougars had six players score in double figures, led by Jonathan Tull's 21 points. Travis Sylvestre had 14, while Alex Igual and Ofori both finished with 11 and Brandon Tull and Stephen Shields had 10 points apiece. Sylvestre also led all players with seven rebounds, with Jonathan Tull and Aaron McGowan both collecting five assists.

The U of R will have its final tune-up before Canada West play starts this weekend at an eight-team tournament hosted by Cape Breton University. The Cougars will start out against UPEI in the quarterfinals and will meet either Acadia or Nipissing on Friday before finishing out the weekend with a final game on Saturday.

The Cougars start Canada West play on Nov. 6 and Nov. 7 at Brandon.
