Kruise Reddick notched a goal and two helpers as the Alberta Golden Bears walloped the University of Regina men's hockey team 9-2 on Friday at The Co-operators Centre. Jordan Hickmott scored twice, and Jamie Crooks, Jayden Hart, Rhett Rachinski, Lucas Nickles, Levko Koper and Jordan Rowley also lit the lamp for the Golden Bears.
Tyler Bell and
Tyler Giebel replied for the Cougars, who fall to 1-2 with the loss.
The Golden Bears lived up to their No. 1 national ranking on Friday, striking early and often in the Cougars' first home game of the season. It only took the visitors 16 seconds to get on the board following the opening puck drop, as Reddick and Koper set up Hickmott for his first of the night. Koper added to the lead at the midway point of the opening frame, as he backhanded a shot past
Mitch Kilgore.
The Cougars bounced back in a hurry, first with a spectacular wrist shot off the stick of Giebel. Giebel took a feed from
Austin Bourhis and went up the right wing, beating Luke Siemens high to the glove side to cut the lead in half. Just over two minutes later, the home team would even it up, thanks to Bell's first Canada West goal. The marker came off some crisp passing from the Cougars, started by
Dylen McKinlay.
J.J. Coleshaw took a pass from McKinlay and fired a pass backdoor to Bell, who was waiting on the doorstep for the easy tap in.
Alberta wasted no time squashing any momentum the Cougars had after consecutive goals to close the first period. The Golden Bears scored at the 2:05, 7:49, 13:32 and 16:44 marks in the second period, with first-year forward Jayden Hart assisting on three out of the four goals in the second.
The onslaught continued in the third period, with Hickmott scoring his second of the night, Hart picking up his fourth point of the night, and Jordan Rowley adding the ninth goal of the evening for the Golden Bears.
The Golden Bears peppered Regina goaltenders all night, amassing 66 shots in the win. Kilgore started the game in net, stopping 29 shots. Rookie
Dawson MacAuley (pictured) came in after Reddick scored on the powerplay in the second, and ended up making 28 saves. Siemens made 22 saves in the win for Alberta.
Alberta improves to 2-0-1 after splitting with the Lethbridge Pronghorns last weekend.
The Cougars and Golden Bears will battle again on Saturday at 7 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre.
