Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars close home schedule with 2-1 loss to UNBC

The University of Regina women's soccer team wrapped up their home schedule with a 2-1 loss to the Northern British Columbia Timberwolves at the U of R Field on Sunday.

Sydney Hall scored twice for the Timberwolves, and Karlee Vorrieter (pictured) found the net for the Cougars.

UNBC's early breakthrough came after a solo raid down the left side by Hall. Cougar keeper Savannah Williams got a piece of Hall's shot from about 10 yards out, but the ball squeaked through and into the right corner of the net to put the visitors up one just three minutes in.

The Timberwolves had a glorious opportunity to go up two just before the half, but Williams dove to her left to make a save on a penalty kick by Hall - and the visitors would soon regret that missed opportunity when the U of R's Vorrieter struck from 20 yards out on a beautiful left-footed chip shot in injury time that went bar down.

The two teams continued to go back and forth with chances in the second half, with the Cougars having two strong chances to take a late lead. The first was a free kick from just outside the box that was taken by Deanna Dartige. Dartige had a good look at the net but her shot was blocked by the UNBC wall. Tove Werner had a chance just three minutes later, but UNBC keeper Jordan Hall had just enough time to get over and catch the ball before it snuck in the top corner of the net.

The deciding goal came in the 85th minute, when Hall took a long feed from Tianna Pius and poked the ball around Williams who had come out to challenge. Hall deposited a shot into the net just out of the reach of a backtracking Dartige to put the visitors up for good.

Williams tallied five saves on the match while Hall stopped four for the visitors.

UNBC (1-8-3) finishes off the Canada West schedule next weekend with its fifth and sixth consecutive matches away from home, as the Timberwolves travel to UBC Okanagan and Thompson Rivers.

The Cougars (1-9-2) close out conference play next weekend with matches at Manitoba and at Winnipeg.
