Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars blanked by Bisons

The University of Regina women's soccer team was downed 1-0 on Saturday by a hometown Manitoba Bisons team that is fighting for a Canada West home playoff game.

The Cougars drop to 1-10-2 with the loss, eliminating them from Canada West playoff contention.

The first half on Saturday was a defensive battle, with Brianna Wright (pictured) having the two best chances of the opening 45 minutes. Wright had a shot at the goal in just the second minute that sailed just wide of the net, followed by another chance in the 15th minute that was saved by a diving Madison Wilford.

Savannah Williams had a pair of nice saves in the first half, stopping shots from Selina Speranza and Alanna Shaw to keep the game scoreless at the break.

Manitoba (7-4-2) broke the scoreless tie just after halftime, with a goal off the foot of Speranza in the 47th minute. Speranza's fourth of the season was assisted by Alyssa Daley. Daley sent a through ball past the Cougar defence, sending Speranza in alone. The fourth-year midfielder took the feed and beat Williams for what would eventually be the game winner.

The Bisons defenders stood their ground in the final minutes of the match, withstanding attacks from the Cougar offence.

Regina will square off against the Winnipeg Wesmen (1-10-1) on Sunday in the final match of their Canada West season.
