FRIDAY: vs. Saskatchewan Huskies, noon, U of R Field
SATURDAY: at Saskatchewan Huskies, noon, PotashCorp ParkThe University of Regina women's soccer team is back in action this weekend against the provincial rival Saskatchewan Huskies. The two teams will play a home-and-home set, with Saturday's match at the U of R Field and Sunday's rematch at PotashCorp Park in Saskatoon.
The Cougars (1-5-2) are coming off two losses on the West coast, falling to the UBC Thunderbirds 3-0 and Victoria Vikes 1-0.
Savannah Williams took the loss in net both days for the Cougars, making four saves against the Thunderbirds and an impressive 10 against the Vikes.
Saskatchewan also had a tough trip last weekend, as they were downed 2-0 by Victoria and 4-1 by the Thunderbirds.
The young Cougars have shown improvement over the course of the season, and head coach
Bob Maltman has been impressed with his 13 first year athletes.
"I've been very happy with the overall progression of each of the first-year players, they're becoming more comfortable with the ball and making better choices," Maltman said. "They're growing into significant contributors and they fit well with the team on and off the pitch."
Leading the way for the first years is
Tove Werner, who hails from Linköping, Sweden. Werner (pictured) has started seven of the Cougars' eight games, and has been a consistent asset at the midfield position.
"Tove has done very well adapting to the CIS game, she is used to playing at a high standard and her style of play fits well with us."
Williams has also made an impact for the Cougars, taking over for
Kacey McFee after the opening two games of the season. She has seen a lot of action between the posts, ranking ninth in Canada West with 37 saves made through the first four weeks.
